Windies win then Lara quits international game

This article is more than 17 years old

Brian Lara last night announced his retirement from the international game and tomorrow plays his 299th and final ODI, a Super Eights game against England. The West Indies captain, 37, played 131 Tests and averaged 52.88 with a top score of 400 not out, a world record, made against England in 2004. He also achieved the highest first-class score of 501 not out, for Warwickshire against Durham in 1994. "I've given this extensive consideration and on Saturday I will be bidding farewell to international cricket as a player," the Trinidadian, left, said after West Indies beat Bangladesh by 99 runs at Kensington Oval. "I've already spoken to the board and to my players." Pakistan have named the all-rounder Shoaib Malik, 25, as captain for the rest of the year. Younis Khan, deputy to Inzamam-ul-Haq, who resigned during their disastrous World Cup campaign, cited personal reasons and stress for his decision to turn the job down.
