West Indies drop Lara and nine others in pay row

West Indies will tour Sri Lanka this month without Brian Lara and most of their leading players because of a dispute over payments.

The West Indies Cricket Board and the West Indies Players' Association could not agree on guaranteed fees from the sponsor Digicel. The players' union had requested $150,000 (£85,000), but the board only agreed to pay $50,000.

WICB named a weakened 14-man squad late on Thursday, all of whom signed tour contracts for the six-week series of two Tests and a triangular one-day series, which also involves India.

Shivnarine Chanderpaul, who led the team in the recent home series against South Africa and Pakistan, is the only senior player in the line-up and is retained as captain. Of the originally selected squad of 13, only Chanderpaul, the fast bowler Daren Powell and rookie wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin are included.

The batsmen missing are: Lara, Chris Gayle, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Wavell Hinds and Devon Smith; also absent are the fast bowlers Fidel Edwards, Corey Collymore, Pedro Collins and Ian Bradshaw while the all-rounder Dwayne Bravo is also not going. Eight players from the A team touring Sri Lanka have been drafted in.

The board's chief executive officer Roger Brathwaite said the pay demands were excessive. "The board cannot afford this latest demand by WIPA for $150,000 given the level of sponsorship fees already paid for this year," Brathwaite said.

He added that the $50,000 for the Sri Lanka tour brought total sponsorship fees already paid to 18% of the yearly sponsorship figure of $3.375m (£1.9m), with a tour to Australia still to come.

Brathwaite said negotiations are ongoing over a mechanism where a fixed percentage of the net annual sponsorship would be paid to the players.

A strike by West Indies players in another sponsorship row was only narrowly averted before the Test series against South Africa in April.
