Brian Lara made 45 on his return as West Indies cruised to a 41-run win over Free State in a World Cup warm-up match in Bloemfontein yesterday.

Lara, who has not played a one-day international since September because of a mystery illness, batted fluently but Shivnarine Chanderpaul top-scored with an unbeaten 97.

In other warm-up games Namibia beat Gauteng by six wickets after bowling the state team out for 126 and Bangladesh lost to KwaZulu-Natal by 38 runs after scoring only 153.

The South Africa all-rounder Jacques Kallis and the opening batsman Herschelle Gibbs escaped with only bruises after being hit during net practice in Cape Town.

Kallis was struck on the left big toe by a yorker and Gibbs on the shoulder but both are expected to be fit for the World Cup opening game against West Indies on Sunday.

Australia have not given up hope of Michael Bevan recovering from a torn groin muscle in time to play against Pak istan in Johannesburg next Tuesday.

"He's progressing really well and the medical staff are very pleased with his progress," said an Australia spokesman. "He'll be monitored at the end of every day with a view to upping the level of his recovery work."

Lloyds of London has offered more than $20m cover in the event of a temporary grandstand collapsing during the World Cup but refused to provide cover for the matches in Zimbabwe should any of them be cancelled due to political disturbances.
