Brian Lara was today admitted to hospital in Colombo suffering from suspected hepatitis - a disease of the liver - having earlier scored a century for the West Indies.
Lara complained of feeling unwell before the West Indies' ICC Champions Trophy match with Kenya at the SSC, but played on and scored 111. The star batsman's innings was the backbone of his side's 261 for six, but after he had completed his knock, a doctor was called.
Following a preliminary examination, a decision was made to admit Lara to a local hospital for tests.
West Indies manager Ricky Skerritt said: "Brian has been feeling below par for a couple of days but was well enough to take part in the game today.
"When he came in from batting he was in obvious discomfort and the doctor was consulted. The latest information is that Brian will spend the next 24 hours in hospital undergoing tests.
"At this stage the most likely diagnosis is hepatitis, but this has yet to be confirmed."
